How does a trailing drawdown work?

A trailing drawdown is a max loss limit that rises as your account makes new highs, staying the same distance below them, and never moves back down. On a $50K account with a $2,000 max loss, the limit starts at $48,000. Close a day at $51,200 and an end-of-day limit moves up to $49,200; lose $500 the next day and it stays at $49,200, with $1,500 of room left.

What is the difference between end-of-day and intraday?

An end-of-day drawdown moves only from your balance at the close, while an intraday drawdown follows your highest balance in real time, open profit included. On a day where a trade runs $1,500 up and gives $1,000 back, the intraday limit rises by $1,500 and the end-of-day limit by $500, so the intraday account ends the day with less room. Try a Day above shows the same day under all three types.

When does a trailing drawdown stop?

A trailing drawdown stops rising at its lock point, which a firm usually sets at the starting balance or just above it. With a $2,000 max loss and a lock at the starting balance plus $100, the limit stops at $50,100 once your high reaches $52,100; from then on, every dollar of profit adds to your room. Check your own firm’s rules for where it locks, and whether the lock applies in the evaluation, once funded, or both.

Common questions

How do you calculate a trailing drawdown?

Take your highest balance so far and subtract the max loss: that is your limit, unless it has reached the point where it stops trailing. On a $50K account with a $2,000 max loss and a high of $51,200, the limit is $49,200. On an end-of-day drawdown the high is your best closing balance; on an intraday one it includes open profit.

Does a trailing drawdown include open profit?

An intraday trailing drawdown does: it follows your balance in real time, so open profit raises the limit even if the trade gives it back. An end-of-day drawdown only moves at the close, though at many firms an open loss that takes you below the limit during the day still fails the account.

Does a trailing drawdown ever go down?

No. A trailing drawdown only rises, and it stops rising at its lock point if the firm has one. A losing day leaves the limit where it was and takes away room.
